As the developer of TimeDicer, I'd like to explain that TimeDicer has undergone quite a lot of improvement since Mike McG posted, so I think and hope the bugs he found (I don't know what they were) are now gone.

The new home page is http://www.timedicer.co.uk

If anyone does try it and has difficulties, please email me so we can fix them before announcing to the world that it's buggy! Many thanks, Dominic

Cool I'll check that out. And by the way, I found the TimeDicer script to be quite buggy. :(

Mike McG, thanks for the heads-up on TimeDicer! I might experiment with it in a virtual machine when I have time...

One alternative [hybrid commercial/]open source option I have been considering is Amanda/Zmanda, which provides a supported & native Windows client that uses the Volume Shadow Service (VSS): http://www.amanda.org/

By the way, you might be interested in this (which integrates VSS) http://www.timedicer.info/timedicer-man.html

Great survey of the rdiff-backup situation on Windows. I'm currently researching this again (having given up originally in Sept 08) and about to read the links you posted. Are you aware of any progress in resolving the 'locked files' issue?
